Budapest Street Art
Whenever I visit a new city I’m always on the lookout for street art and Budapest didn’t disappoint.
There is street art all around the city, so what follows is a small selection of what I found interesting.
Hungary 6 England 3
This mural celebrates Hungary beating England 6-3 at Wembley Stadium in 1953. It was the greatest match in the history of the Hungary football team.
Rubik’s Cube
The Rubik was invented in Hungary by Ernő Rubik. In 2014, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its invention and also the 70th birthday of the inventor, a mural was painted on a wall in Rumbach Sebestyén utca.
At the bottom are written the words “There is always a solution – and not just one.” in Hungarian.
Sissy – Habsburg Royal Empress Elisabeth
Further along Rumbach Sebestyén utca, next to Bluebird Café and opposite the Jewish synagogue, you’ll see this mural of Sissy, the Habsburg Royal Empress Elisabeth.
1957 Time Magazine Cover
The above mural shows the cover of Time Magazine from 1957. This shows Time’s Man of the Year as the Hungarian Freedom Fighter. In 1956 there was an uprising against Soviet oppression. The mural is painted where freedom fighters József Jambrik and Sándor Merő were killed. It’s on Wesselényi utca. Incidentally, this is there street where our Airbnb apartment was located.
Downtown Janikovszky Park Mural
This mural is located at Downtown Janikovszky Park and was painted by László Brunszkó. You can read more about it here.
Heart
Just across the road from the Converse All Stars mural is this heart.
Eyes
Just along from the heart are these eyes. It’s on Dob utca.
Tiled Street Art
As well as street art paintings, I came across some tiled street art. The ne above is above a brick and looks like the guy is maybe scateboarding.
I’m not sure if what you see above and below is street art on not. It’s a serious of words that don’t seem to have any relation to the buildings they’re on. I have no idea what they all mean.
