How to Get From Ljubljana to Maribor by Train
After 4 days in Ljubljana we continued our journey further north. We decided to stop in Maribor for a few days before heading further north to Graz in Austria.
There are numerous trains between Ljubljana every day. We opted to buy our tickets at the train station rather than online.
Ljubljana Train Station
Ljubljana train station is a very grand looking building.
Once you enter through the main entrance, you’ll see this very elegant foyer area. The ticket office is to the left.
We booked the 10.55 train that arrives in Maribor at 13.29. That’s a journey time of 2 hrs 34 mins. There are inter-city trains available that take 1 hr 50 mins but the Slovenian Railways website shows possible delays and bus replacements due to construction work.
You can check train times on the Slovenian Railways website.
Our tickets cost 9.60 EUR each. Rail Europe and The Trainline websites both showed there were no trains available.
You can also buy train tickets from the ticket machines. I test one and it’s very easy to choose and buy the right ticket.
Our Train
Our train from Ljubljana to Maribor looked very new. It was less than half full and the ride was very comfortable. This is the standard of train you can expect in much of Western Europe.
There was free wifi on the train although the speed was fairly slow.
The view from the train was mostly hills covered in lush, green trees. Everything looked so clean and beautiful.
The train left Ljubljana on time and arrived in Maribor a few minutes early. It’s the first time in almost 4 months of travel that we’ve had either a train or bus arrive on time.
Maribor Train Station
We were very pleasantly surprised when we arrived at Maribor. The train station looked fairly new and was very clean. Even the area outside the station was beautiful. The area around most train stations around the world is pretty bad. It’s often where homeless people, drunks and taxi scammers hang out. Not in Maribor though. I wish every train station was like this.
The city center is only a few minutes’ walk from the train station, so you most likely won’t need to get a taxi. Our Airbnb with a piano was only 400 meters away.
