Maribor Photo Diary
When we visited new locations, rather than write a post about things to do, we prefer to upload a photo diary of our time.
This works well for us, as we can look back to remember what we saw and did. There are already more than enough articles online about things to do in various locations.
Basilica of Our Mother of Mercy

When we first walked from our Airbnb apartment into the city center, this is the first grand building that we saw.
Pro tip: There’s a great Thai restaurant just to the right of this photo.
Kojak (NOB – National Liberation Monument)

This National Liberation Monument is know by locals as the Kojak Monument.
Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist was built in the 12th century.

The cathedral may look closed but is actually open. Just enter through the front door.

Entry to the cathedral is free. Far too many cities now charge to enter their religious buildings.
University Library

The library is located opposite the cathedral.
Maribor Castle

Maribor Castle was built by Emperor Friderik III between the years 1478 and 1483 for the purpose of fortifying the north eastern part of the town wall.
Plague Column

The original Plague Column was built in 1681 but this one is from 1743. It was erected in gratitude to the plague ending in 1860. The plague claimed the lives of one third of the population of Maribor.
Maribor Town Hall

Maribor Town Hall is on the Main Square.
Maribor Main Square

Maribor Main Square is where the Town Hall and Plague Column are located.
Main Square Fountain

This fountain is popular with children. They love running through it and getting wet.
Pyramid Hill

Pyramid Hill is a hill overlooking Maribor that has a small chapel at the top. I took a walk to the top of Pyramid Hill.
Vine House

These vines were planted 400 years ago and still produce grapes. They’re said to be the oldest grape-producing vines the world.

Glavni Most

Glavni Most is near Main Square. It’s a beautiful bridge. There is also a new pedestrian bridge next to it that hasn’t opened yet.

Above is a view of the footbridge while standing on Glanvi Most.
Trafika – Museum for One

This tiny traffic museum was closed when we visited. There was a notice saying it was closed because of staff illness. It’s located next to Glavni most.
Železniški Most

Železniški Most is a railway bridge. It looks beautiful.
Maribor River View

Maribor looks so beautiful from the river bank.
Artwork

We saw these interesting characters on some windowsills.

There was an art gallery upstairs.

Sneakers

Sneakers hanging from cables is usually an American thing, but someone in Maribor is trying to start a new trend.
Maribor Post Office

The post office in Maribor is a grand building. It’s not the sort of post office we have in the UK.
Cute Flower Shop

It’s shops like this that help make Maribor such a pretty place.
Monument to Boris Kidrič

Boris Kidrič is a former prime minister of Slovenia. He led the Slovene resistance against occupation by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy.
Maribor Museum

Maribor Museum is located in the city center.
Maribor Houses

Just a house in Maribor. Another reason the city is so pretty.
Leon Štukelj Square

Leon Štukelj Square was opened in 2011 and is the biggest square in Slovenia at 9,000 square meters.
This is just a small selection what what there is to see and do in Maribor. It’s been a real surprise to us how such a beautiful town isn’t more well known.
