Maribor, Slovenia – Useful Information

We’ve been traveling for the last few months and one of the annoyances of arriving in a new places is the lack of basic information.

Maribor is not a well-known place for many, so I’ll go over the essential information you need in this post.

Are there Uber taxis in Maribor

Uber doesn’t operate in Slovenia. However, Maribor is a small city and you can walk almost anywhere. If staying in the city center, you won’t need a taxi or car.

How to get from Maribor train and bus stations to the city center

You can walk. Everything in Maribor is just a short walk away. If loooking for somewhere to stay, we can recommend the great Airbnb apartment we stayed at.

Are there bicycles for hire in Maribor?

Yes. Just download the mbajk app. It only cost 1 EUR to register for a week. It’s very easy to use and there are more than enough bike stations around the city. It’s also the best city I’ve ever visited for cycle paths. They are, literally, all over the city.

Do I need to pay tourist tax in Maribor?

Tourist tax in Maribor is $3.19 per person per night. A reduced rate applies to children. In Ljubljana, we paid the tax to the apartment owner. In Maribor, the owner took our details to register us ut didn’t mention any tourist tax. I assume it was included in the price we paid for the apartment.

Are there any places to eat late at night?

Yes. Pekara Piramida is open 24/7 and serves fast food but in clean surroundings. We ate there a couple of times. It’s reasonably prices as well.

What currency does Slovenia use?

Slovenia uses the Euro.

What supermarkets does Maribor have?

We saw Mercator and Spar supermarkets around the city. There is also a large shopping center called Europark.

Is Maribor safe?

Maribor felt like one of the safest and cleanest cities we’ve ever visited. It’s a bit of a hidden treasure. It’s also a youthful city, as the university has around 20,000 students.
