Monsieur Chat (Mr Chat) Street Art
According to Wikipedia, “M. Chat (also known as Monsieur Chat and Mr Chat) is the name of a graffiti cat that originally appeared in Orléans, France in 1997. The graffiti appeared most frequently on chimneys, but was also sighted in other places, such as train platforms and at political rallies. The artist was originally anonymous, but in 2007 Thoma Vuille was caught in the act of creating the cat.”
We didn’t know anything about Mr Chat until we visited Sarajevo and started see it around the city. The one above has a date of 2009, although many others are undated.
After searching online for information about the cat, I decided to take photos of all then ones I saw.
The one above is undated and partly covered by graffiti.
Like the top images, this Mr Chat is surrounded by roses. I assume this is related to the Sarajevo Roses – See Sarajevo – First Impressions for more information about them.
The 4th Mr Chat that I saw was high up on a building outside an apartment. I assume the apartment owners must have given the artist permission to get onto their balcony.
This is the 5th and final Mr Chat that I came across. I’m sure I would have found many more if we’d stayed in Sarajevo for long.
According to Wikipedia article mentioned above, Mr Chat has also been spotted in Paris, New York, Vermont, Naples, Belgrade, Seoul, and Tangier.
Hopefully, I’ll see more of Mr Chat on our travels.
