Things to See and Do in Rijeka
Rijeka is often overlooked by most visitors to Croatia, but it’s well worth adding to your itinerary.
Rijeka is my kind of town. It’s a bit grittier and more urban than places like Dubrovnik, Split, Sibenik and Zadar. I’d say it’s more like a smaller version of Zagreb. I loved it.
Here’s an overview of what we saw and did while we were there.
Palach Club Street Art
This the area that our Airbnb apartment was located in Rijeka city center. I love it there. The street and the generally area has some great street art. The club has been located there since 1966 and this is a well-known are of the city.
For more great photos, see Palach Club Street Art.
Petar Kružić Stairway
Petar Kružić Stairway is a stone stairway that goes from Rjeka city center to Trsat Castle (see below). The stairway has 561 steps. See Walking the Petar Kružić stairway to Trsat Castle for further details.
Trsat Castle
Trsat Castle is one of the top tourist attractions in Rijeka. You can walk to it from the city center via the Petar Kružić stairway, mentioned above. Walking the Petar Kružić stairway to Trsat Castle was one of the first things I did in Rijeka.
A Walk Along Molo Longo
Molo Longo is a 1.7 km long breakwater, pier and promenade. It’s popular with locals at weekends and gives fantastic views of the city.
Street Art near Harbour
There’s some great street art that’s worth seeing near the start of Molo Longo. See Harbour Street Art Rijeka.
Capuchin Church of Our Lady of Lourdes
This church is located across the road from the bus station, so if you arrive by bus you’ll easily spot it. The church was built over 30 years and was completed in 1929. Read more about it at Rijeka Heritage.

St. Vitus is a Roman Catholic Cathedral that’s located in the city center. It was build in 1638.
To the left of the cathedral is the entrance to Rijeka Tunnel – See below.
Tiled Heart
This tiled heart is also near St. Vitus Cathedral. Can you find it. If documented tiled art around the world at Space Invaders Around The World.

Rijeka Tunnel was built during World War II. After being closed for 75 years, it was opened to the public in 2017.
See Rijeka Tunnel for more photos and information.

Rijeka City Clock Tower is located on the main street of Korza. The city tower dates back to the 1700s, but it was a century later before the tower got its clock.

Just at edge of the old town is a memorial to those that were killed during the Croatian War of Independence.
Rijeka European Capital of Culture 2020
Rijeka was voted European Capital of Culture in 2020. You’ll still see some traces of it around the city.
