Upcafe – Our Favorite Vegetarian and Vegan Cafe in Split, Croatia
When I first visited Split 15 years ago, I used to visit a tiny café called Makro Vega. A few years later it moved to larger premises. Unfortunately, it closed down during the pandemic.
In 2011, the owner of Makro Vega opened Upcafe. I’m glad to report that it’s still going strong. I’ve also eaten here many times over the years.
When my wife an I visited recently, I had the vegan Pašticada. It consisted of a seitan burger with pašticada sauce, mashed potatoes, an Indian vegetable curry and a salad. It was delicious. Cost of a very reasonable 10 EUR.
My wife had a Healthy Meal. This had sweet potato fries, vegetable risotto, mixed salad, hemp burger, home-made vegan mayonnaise, and home-made BBQ sauce. My wife gave it top marks. This meal cost 11 EUR.
Upcafe is a popular local café that around a 5-10 minute walk from the city center. It has seating for 10 people downstairs and 10 people upstairs.
The staff are super-friendly and helpful. Every time we’ve eaten there, the food has arrived quickly.
On another visit, I had the Vegan Stew shown above. This consists of wholegrains, legumes, vegetables, tofu, seitan, and minestrone. The stew changes every day, so you might not get what you see above. The staff can tell you what stew is on the menu for any particular day.
The stew is a lighter meal that costs 6 EUR.
You can see the menu in the following images.
