Walking the Petar Kružić Stairway to Trsat Castle
Walking the Petar Kružić stairway to Trsat Castle is one of the top things to do in Rijeka. Not only do you get to walk up 561 steps but you also get to see the magnificent views of Rijeka from the castle.
I read that the walk up the steps was difficult, but I found it to be fairly easy. I guess it depends how fit you are, but I didn’t see anyone walking up that had any difficulty.
The Petar Kružić Stairway
The Petar Kružić Stairway starts just at the edge of the city center. Look for the arch shown in the photos above.
Inside the archway you’ll see this plaque. I don’t have any idea what it says though.
Once you’re through the arch, you’ll see the steps. The first section goes under the train track.
From that point onwards, it’s just a matter of walking. Most of the way there are 5 or 6 steps followed by a short flat section.
When I walked up the steps, there were only a few other people walking.
Once you get to the top, turn left and you’ll be heading towards Trsat Castle. You’ll be able to see the castle to your left at some parts of the walk up the stairway.
Trsat Castle
Trsat Castle is fairly small but the main reason to go is for the awesome views. Be sure to walk to the top of castle turret shown above, as this is where you get the best views.
Above is the main entrance. Entrance to the castle is free, although there is a small charge (1.33 EUR) for the permanent exhibition.
The above photo shows what it’s like just inside the main entrance. On the upper level there’s a café with great views.

Trsat Castle Views
These photos don’t do the views justice, so I’d suggest you visit yourself and see the real views.
Trsat Castle is on a hill 138 meters above Rijeka. The castle dates from the 13th century.
The castle offers views of Rijeka city center and the entire Kvarner Bay.
Above you can see a view of an industrial area near the city center. This is where you’ll find the abandoned paper factory, Hartera.
On the other side of the castle you get a great view of this road bridge and the tunnels into the hill.
