A Walk Up Pyramid Hill in Maribor, Slovenia
When we first arrived in Maribor, I spotted a small white building on a hill near the town center. I looked like a place that would have a good view of the city, so I decided to find out more.
It tuned out to be Pyramid Hill, so I took a walk up there early one evening.
My first view of Pyramid Hill
If you look closely at the image above, you’ll see a small white building on top of the hill. That’s where I headed to.
Getting to Pyramid Hill
Getting to Pyramid Hill is easy. You can walk there from there city center. It’s just 1.6 km from the Basilica of Our Mother of Mercy. As you get closer to it, you’ll see signs like the one above.
When you get to the entrance, there are a few signs offering information. The walk to Pyramid Hill is part of the Piramida-Kalvarija natural history education trail. It’s 5 km long and takes around 2-3 hours to walk.
I didn’t walk the whole trail. I only walked to Pyramid Hill.
Getting to the top
For most of the way to the top you’ll follow a path like shown above. It’s a fairly easy walk, as the path zig zags instead of going straight up.
The Pyramid
Once you reach the top you’ll see the back of the Pyramid.
The Pyramid is actually a small chapel.
The views from Pyramid Hill
There are great views of Maribor from the top of the hill. Our Airbnb apartment is in the building on the right of the above image.
At the bottom of this image you can see the vine fields. You’ll pass through them on your walk up the hill.
The vineyard was restored in 1986 when 17,800 vines of Riesling clones were planted. These vines produce quality wines that have won awards all over the world.
Maribor is a beautiful town on ground level and just as beautiful when looking down from the hill. It’s one of the cleanest and most pleasant towns I’ve every visited.
What I like most about Maribor is that almost every street is lined by trees. This helps give t a very relaxing vibe.
Lizards
I was lucky enough to spot two large lizards at the top of the hill. One ran away before I could take a photo. The one above just sat still, even though I was quite close to it.
If you visit Maribor, be sure to take a walk up this hill.
